As a senior this year, we're not even allowed to speak about the TAKS in front of our English teacher because she hates it that much. I've actually seen a huge difference in my classes this year because the teachers don't have to prepare for that useless test. I remember everyone, including the teachers, moaning and complaining when it came time to teach for TAKS. It's unfair that you and us alike are penalized when we don't do good. I expect more from the state as well and our educational system is something I wish to change when my opinion actually matters to them. Until then, though, I am forced to watch my peers and teachers alike suffer through it while I stand on the sidelines trying to help as best as I can. I'm a Texas teacher and I know exactly the problems your teacher has to deal with...stealing your learning time to prepare you for an unfair and arbitary test that, like you said, doesn't have any rhyme or reason. After nearly 20 years of teaching in TX I have truly had it. My husband keeps on asking me why I don't quit...he sees me cry before and after school EVERY day. It is so intolerable to HAVE TO teach for the TAKS when we don't even know WHAT IS ON the TAKS. When we seem to be having a good time and the kids are learning, we are hauled down to the administrator's offices and told we will be "written up" and given a poor evaluation if we don't get serious and teach to the test. Once we do, it is no wonder our students turn off immediately and end up being tremendous behavior problems. So many of them know they won't pass the test anyway, so why bother? When the test results come in, we feel horrible for the students who didn't pass because unless they bold-face lie, everyone will know that they are "losers". Then, we are losers because we didn't get all of our kids to pass. We are actually financiallly penalized for this. I can't go on. I just am too upset. Anyway, I am really sorry about how you and your classmates are treated. It is so unfair. I expect more from the State of Texas. Maybe I'm delusional.
